On January 1, it became illegal for anyone not registered with the Department of Health and Human Services as a medical Marijuana patient, caregiver, or dispensary operator to grow or possess Marijuana in the State of Maine.

Legislators working with the Maine Marijuana Policy Iniitiative, the Maine Civil Liberties Union, Medical Marijuana Caregivers of Maine,  the Maine Tea Party/Maine Refounders, have introduced legislation that addresses this and other the key problems with the current law.

Some of the changes "An Act To Amend the Maine Medical Use of Marijuana Act to Reflect the Will of the People and Protect Patient Privacy" would bring about include:

  • Making it optional for patients and caregivers to register with DHHS, while preserving the registry for those who want to have a state-issued identification card.
  • Clarifying the definition of a "closed, locked" facility to ensure that patients and caregivers are permitted to grow their medicine outdoors.
  • Allowing doctors to determine whether their patients will benefit from medical Marijuana -- without being restricted to a set of conditions approved by the state.
  • Eliminating unnecessary and invasive inspections of caregivers' homes.

In addition, MMPI, is working with our allies to introduce some exciting new legislation regarding the cultivation and possession of Marijuana that we will tell you more about soon --
"An Act to Remove Criminal Penalties for Possession of up to 5 Ounces of Marijuana" and "An Act to Decriminalize Cultivation of Small Amounts of Marijuana for Personal Use".

Watch your e-mail for details on the legislation and information about what you can do!
